It's possible, as long as the number has not yet been assigned to someone else, but it isn't easy. After a six month waiting period the number will be reallocated to a certain 'original' provider, depending upon whether it is a landline number or a mobile number.

The key is, don't give up your number. If you discontinue your phone service, there is a service called "numberbarn" that you can port the number to and they will keep it active in your name for $2 per month. They also have a catalog of available numbers, you can shop and choose one.

You can also port in to Google Voice. $20 one-time fee, no monthly charge, plus the number is active and you can forward calls to your main phone (or turn that off and just get voicemails or use it for texting).

  1. I know about Google Voice. You can get one phone number. But it's google. Therefore it's not really 'free' (you are Google's product, not it's customer)

  2. Numberbarn charges only a nominal fee, and you can have as many numbers as you want:. -- $2/mo per line includes texting. Voice service costs a bit more.
