Just married recently. 30-year old trad wife.

Knows she’s needs to lose weight and get back in shape. She’s 5’7” and delightfully curvy (the good kind). Usually she’s around 130 with her DD’s and booty which is great.

Lately she’s gotten kind of down with things and she put on about 15lbs which she wants to lose.

She really wants to lose it but I think she gets too down on herself and too embarrassed to even go to the gym. So she distracts herself, doesn’t plan the gym in, and then get more down on herself and the cycle repeats.

I too need to lose a few lbs but for me it’s easy to just get in the gym and start hammering it out especially because I work for myself and set my own schedule.

I’m brand new to this married thing so I don’t know how to help guide her and lead her as her husband without making her feel bad and end up causing more harm than good.

Do any of you married men have any advice for me?

CICO as most people imagine it is a myth. If you don't believe it, try eating 2,000 calories worth of wood every day and let us know how your weight's doing.

More correct, it's calories absorbed vs. calories out. Because digestion is not 100% efficient, and because some nutrients are more easily absorbed than others, and because there are a limited number of metabolic pathways, all calories are not the same. Eating 2,000 calories a day with 70% or more coming from animal fats and less than 10% from carbohydrates will make a very trim person. Those same 2,000 calories stuffed with carbs and seed oils will make for a fat person with metabolic syndrome and heart disease.

Most of the people who don't understand metabolism think they're healthy because they're not fat, but they still have insulin resistance and visceral fat, both of which will kill them early. If they're lucky they'll get a CT angiogram and find out those carbs they though were good were instead oxidizing and glycating their LDL and calcifying their coronary arteries before it kills them.

The usual model assumes that "calories out" is constant. Sadly, the body will recognize a prolonged "starvation mode" (reduced daily caloric intake) and adjust. You may be able to cut for a few weeks, but you'll be cold and tired.

Instead, do IF and (clean) keto.

I know you're very opinionated and unlikely to change your mind on anything, but do notice that your perspective on nutrition is completely aligned with mainstream medicine, which doesn't even realize that t2 diabetes is curable.

Of course T2 Beetus is curable. But low-impulsion control, self-entitlement and laziness are in the way.

Your perspective on CICO is still lined up with mainstream medicine. Each macronutrient has a meaningful impact on the metabolic pathways. Carbs spike insulin, which stores fat. If the body is in fat-storing mode, when it runs out of daily (short-term) calories, it will just shut things down to burn less, rather than tap into stored fat.

You don't have to be so hostile... just reconsider. Why is society moving towards worse and worse health, in so many ways? What is different about what and how [often] we eat from 50 years ago?

I put on a decent amount of weight after getting married myself. I've been able to loose about half of it in the past few months with my gradually increasing running regiment. That being said there is about a zero percent chance I'll ever get my wife to go running. My wife loves being outdoors, and loves spending time with our dog. About a month ago I suggested instead of playing with our dog in the yard; we take the dog on walks and explore the neighborhood. You burn about 100 calories per mile whether you are walking or running. This has made a noticeable difference, and we enjoy the time together.

For any real amount of fat reduction, exercise won't work. It is helpful in increasing metabolism, but it doesn't burn enough calories to make any kind of serious difference in weight. To lose fat, you need to diet. It's the only way. Diet and exercise is even better, but exercise itself won't work unless you are just a tiny bit overweight and have only been that way for a short time.

Fully agree, but it's harder to keep the weight off if you consider it "a diet". Your brain categorizes it as a temporary thing, and will go right back to the same consumption of bad foods and/or quantities quickly afterwards. It's better to consider it a lifestyle change, as then you're more likely to stick to it if it's considered a permanent thing.

There is only one way to loose weight. That is to burn more calories than you consume, period. Both variables will make a difference, and I agree utilizing both variables is the best way. Most of my life I never concerned myself with what I ate. Most of it has been poor dietary choices, but with running 70-90 miles a week I couldn't have gained weight if I wanted. It was only after I started working 84 hr/wk and the my running tapered off that I began to gain weight. Additionally this thread has discussing lossing smaller amounts of weight. I've lost 20 of the 40 pounds I'm after. My wife is trying to loose 15. I don't know where she's at because I haven't asked her weight.

Find a outdoor activity you like doing together and do it. Hiking or biking can burn lots of calories. We do fishing and kayaking. Or just toss her down the hole and demand she puts the lotion on the skin!

Try the low carb or keto approach if you aren't doing it yet. Carbs is how you gain weight.

Whatever you try, make sure it's sustainable. Weight loss is a lifestyle change, not a temporary diet.

This. Keto is great for weight loss, but its real health benefits come from lifelong adherence. All that beta hydroxybutyrate your liver makes on a keto diet has tons of health benefits.

Keto is easy as fuck to do and anyone hating on it as an effective weight loss method is a fucking kike. They say true ketoacidosis is hard on your organs, but so is being overweight. Can you take control of the food in your house and what gets eaten?

Keto is not ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is when Type I diabetics (not the fat people kind) have prolonged lack of insulin and elevated blood glucose. You can't get ketoacidosis from a keto diet unless you have some sort of organ failure. You're thinking of ketosis.

The hardest part of keto is while your body adjusts to switching from burning sugar for fuel to burning fat for fuel. It's not always an easy transition, and people can feel tired and even sick during the process. That's why they call it the keto flu.

Ya I haven’t been though be because I could drop weight super fast and out on muscle real easy.

I forget that I’m not meal stocking (or giving her the grocery list) for 2 now. So starting last grocery run I told her not to get any junk, if we wanted something sweet she had to bake it at home using natural sugarless sweetener, and salads go with 2/3 meals.

Still getting used to the married thing. She’s been great so far and it’s only been less than a week.

I'm a big supporter of keto BUT it's a PITA to maintain. As good as and much more realistic is to stick with a low carb diet, ie. < 30 g carbs a day. The weight stays off, you never have sugar cravings, and when you're out for dinner and want to enjoy pizza and a beer with the rest of the gang it's not a big deal.

If OP's wife was a 300 pd junk food addict then I would be pushing keto. But on low carb she'll drop those 15 pounds in no time, and keep them off. That's one of the really great things about low carb: It quickly becomes self-reinforcing.

Interestingly the original keto research done on the Inuit in the early 1900s found that they would constantly slip in and out of ketosis. This was when they were still on their traditional diet.

Need to find what motivates her. I find myself more motivated if someone is waiting on me, so getting a PT a few hours a week might be enough to get her to be motivated to go and accountable to someone else. Once she is in a routine she won't need the PT anymore.

Or just say that both of you will go together a few days a week so you're accountable to each other.

Or just threaten her that you will divorce her ass for someone younger and smaller.

I'm not married because I don't communicate well or understand women, so good luck.

I've been with my wife for 15 years, and maintaining weight has always been required. I usually just tell my wife, bluntly, it's time to start fasting, or working out, etc. She'll acknowledge it, and I'll start seeing improvement within a few weeks. Being a newly wed, you'll need to use your married 'language' to tell her it's time to get off her ass.
