They would be on a piece of faux parchment or parchment colored paper and generally showed the town (at the time of drawing) in a somewhat exaggerated way with local businesses and landmarks featured on the map. They weren't meant for navigation, but were more of a novelty thing.

I see them at times but I can't find an exact name. I'd like to find one for the area where I grew up, but I can't pinpoint what to search for.

I know exactly what you're on about but I think they're just called cartoon maps. A lot of the old ones were either put together by local chambers/tourist districts but were also used as marketing and advertising. Companies that paid could be shown on the map.

I'll look for cartoon map, thank you. I was searching "novelty map" but not coming up with much other than stuff from the golden days of Las Vegas.

From the link posted, I think they're pictorial maps.

I know a couple places that have one on the wall, I'm going to see if I can find a name.

They tend to be in diners and small businesses around the area. There were small companies that would make them and peddle them to the businesses and for a fee include them on the map aalong with landmarks.

Might call thrift stores in the area you grew up, ask if they have any. Or if not, offer to pay them a finder fee to call you when one comes in.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm looking for. They used to be everywhere.

I guess it's going to be more of a hit all the antique stores back home and see if one's available.

Ya, there wasn’t a single name for them, I’ve seen many different companies names who made them. Ack before major corporations obliterated everything interesting and unique about towns and made them all cookie cutter images of each other.

I was driving in California once and had that conversation. I said that we could take any off ramp and it would be the same. Same stores, same layout, same corporate owners. Over 700 miles and 5 off ramps, the same damn business complexes and stores at every one. Even when there was slight variation they were all still owned by the same parent co with only 2 or 3 spaces left open to independent stores, often a hair place or cell phone store.

If that were accurate, it'd improve America.

Very similar to that except they were more folksy and not really meant to be a guide to anything.

Have one hung up in our office, we payed to make it on there. Kind of an advertising thing. Fun to look at it and see what has come and gone
