In the past taking over brick and mortar buildings in the capitol would mean something,

But in todays world with all information being so digital, and taxes being filed and paid with software through banks, rather than through mail.

What significance would taking over the capital really have? It seems like all Russia needs to do is be the one in an area with the most guns and say they are in charge. The media is putting a ton of focus on the capital. Why is that city so important?

The capitol is symbolic, but also where the heads of state have fortified thier assets. Russia's goal is to eliminate "foreign" controlled assets. They could in theory surround the capitol and isolate it, which would neutralize those assets, then set up thier capitol in another city.

But that would look incredibly weak and would be far more costly than razing the city to the ground. And having the old gov hold up anywhere in the country would be like having a well connected terrorist cell in the heart of your country.
