What significance would taking over the capital really have? It seems like all Russia needs to do is be the one in an area with the most guns and say they are in charge. The media is putting a ton of focus on the capital. Why is that city so important?

I think the victory happens when they manage to cut off Ukraine from foreign weapon supplies. It's probably not even easy now, but Ukraine is a big country, so it's possible to smuggle in small arms at least.
