Ukranian men have paid a terrible price in lives fighting with Russia. The ratio of women to men is quite high (which is why so many Ukranian women become mail order brides). The men that survived developed drinking problems and the women just let them, generally taking the attitude of "at least these men are alive". It is very easy for us to say we would do something differently when we have never walked a mile in their shoes.
