A few days ago I noticed and made a post about the fact that TruthSocial was still linking to the Mastodon code base... https://poal.co/s/SocialMedia/504350

Today I noticed that TruthSocial removed the link https://truthsocial.com/open-source and I went to comment on the post but I found the entire sub is gone... and so are dozens of other subs. All deleted by a now deleted user. So some one table flipped, disabled all of the subs they owned, and then deleted their account.

https://poal.co/sitelog

This is an eye opening event for me... This seems like a unintended backdoor to censorship. I know we have malicious actors that visit Poal and I would not be surprised if some sub owners are sleeper agents. Are we OK with subs being able to just disappear with no over site?

lol Calm your nipples.

Someone created these subs, years ago, and mostly used them to share videos from their Dailymotion and YT channels.

Then for some reasons* decided to delete their comments but were too lazy to delete the posts and decided to disable their own subs before deleting their account.

*Spoiler:

I'll enable them back, so users interested in some of these subs can make a if/when they are eligible (according subrequest's sidebar requirements)

Edit: also for those who are interested in a sub that has been disabled where its owner is gone (deleted their account), they can go in as well and ask for a specific sub to be enabled, especially if they were mod in that sub.

you fail to see beyond this specific instance... I never suggested this was anything other than someone table flipping and taking their ball home. But many, many subs here were created in the early days by accounts that have not been seen in a long time. What if some of those were bad actors? Food for thought

so users interested in some of these subs can make a if/when they are eligible

So does having my post moved to a sub count as being an active poster there? I never cared about /socialmedia until you decided it was the best place for my post, just sayin. Sometimes our decision on where to post something is based on our trust level in the specific sub and where we choose to engage. The choice of where to speak and who to speak to is just as important as being able to decide what to say. More food for thought for you

edit: I can't believe you moved this from TellPoal to AskPoal. You just can't help yourself. Are these Jeopardy rules? Did I phrase my question in the form of a answer?

As a normal user without much care for drama, moving the post to AskPoal seems to be framing it as a question, "why were all those subs deleted?", with a simple answer.

It trivializes the discussion and reduces it to just the question AOU felt like answering... when I was in fact not asking a question at all but prompting intelligent discussion, something AOU has forgotten how to do.

lol ok genius.

Sadly this is the typical lack of introspection I expect. You should write a script for pauline to constantly whisper "Memento mori" to you in chat

Can you merge subs?

The other day i noticed very similar subs, sometimes owned by the same people. No need to post om both.

Ome can redirect to the other.there os one named fake news, and another named something similar. Owned by the same person.

[–] 1 pt

There’s no option to merge subs.

User subs are managed by their owners. Admins do not interfere unless it’s a specific request.

Interesting, I remember pinging that person once because I was going to ask about the T-Mobile sub. I can't remember the name, but they didn't visit much and it took some time to get a reply from them.

It's best to ask to re-enable these when a user does that. It may not have been maliciously intended, just an artifact of how the site works.

It may not have been maliciously intended

Yeah I was not necessarily saying this was malicious... I was saying how many subs do you know that are owned by people you trust? How many were created by SBBH? by Q followers? by incels? By feds? By SaneGoat alts?

...and all of a sudden I fear that things could blow up any moment

[–] 1 pt

I know, it was more of an observation that the person in question didn't show up much, probably just deleted their account and moved on.

It's interesting tho, how many people will immediately jump on something like that and yell about how it's state-sponsored bad actors, etc. We've really become jaded these last few decades, but for good reason I guess.

I too lament how jaded we have become. While I feel that it is warranted and prudent, I also feel it is our Achilies heel. We jump at our shadows because everything could be a fed. Without mutual trust communities cannot be formed. Without communities, grass root movements cannot happen.

Gotta assume it's all malicious / intended at this point. The evil ones will find every loophole to exploit and hold it for the right time.

The person hadn't posted much of anything for a long time. I would guess it's more along the lines of what I do every year - clean up old accounts.

[–] 1 pt

But when you own the subs? To me it plays into more of a subvert and wait to strike.
