Ignoring the leftist NPCs and just focusing on the ones objecting to censorship, it's because freedom of speech is a risky position to stake a claim on (whereas whining on Reddit about censorship carries negligible risks). On Poal they'll encounter unpopular ideas which they will have to assess and take a position on. E.g. discussions of the heritability of IQ are heavily censored on Reddit, but on Poal it's common knowledge that median IQ varies by demographic and this carries massive societal consequences. On Poal, they'll discover that freedom of speech includes speech which they may disagree with and that you *can't* have freedom of speech any other way. That's a heck of a pill to swallow because it requires you to declare that anyone who wants to censor speech is unequivocally wrong. Which is going to force you to dropkick a host of friemds and family because they're reveling in falsehood. They'll discover that supporting freedom of speech leads to social ostracism. E.g. their normie friends who'll autistically screech "You post on Poal with all those Nazis and ists and isms and reeeee". Even if they disagree with those viewpoints and simply value freedom of speech, they're going to lose NPC friends over it. It's no small thing.
