I have noticed that only Reddit has new posts every minute. Poal and Score sometimes have no new posts for a while. I wonder why Reddit has still so many users, even if there are also many posts with people complaining about censorship. Why don't they just move to Poal or Score instead of wasting time on Reddit?

bots and shills are not users

[–] 5 pts (edited )

I think people underestimate how many bots there are on the Internet, in general.

old.reddit.com/r/stonkfeed are some of my bots and they make posts 24/7.

There are thousands of GPT3 bots that make fake conversations, as well.

THEN, you add the shills and reddit is literally 99% bullshit and the only way to sift through it is with Reddit Enhancement Suite on old.reddit in browser.

They have shredded most of my bots, by now, as they were more closely aligned with Poal's values.

I even made a PoalFeed bot at one point and, just based on the titles we post here, the bot was neutered and the posts removed.

I can't even remember how many bots I've abandoned as I utilize free services and accounts that I've long since lost passwords to.

old.reddit.com/r/arrestsweb just hums steadily along with zero maintenance.

old.reddit.com/r/newswhatever I abandoned right after I made it.

Believe it or not, we are a minority.

We cant be for sure. Seeing how you have to hide any of the stuff we talk about, we could be legion and never know.

Think of a bell curve. Only a small amount of people think or are comfortable pushing social norms. Those donald trump themed sites are packed with the fat part of the bell curve, lots of stale memes and stupid boomercon thinking. Reddit is mostly bots and midwits.

Most of us don't exist in major online forums. We have numerous online forums and chatrooms that we exist in. Why do you think there's so many based people on twitter. It's because they follow individuals, and twitter can't ban you from following someone. Why do you think there's so many people in secret groups on Discord and Facebook? It's because you can have closed groups that outsiders cannot see.

There's one guy on a discord server that I game with. After getting to know me better, he sent me an invite to his private server. Turns out, it's about ten dudes who post racist and antisemitic memes.

Most of us don't have a major online presence. Most of us have little to no online presence. And some of us have a little online presence in several minor areas.

The amount users allows niche subs to flourish. In this way it can be a goto for information or discussion.

Example, yesterday I instantly found a stream to watch the Dayton 500.

Want to talk about your city, profession, hobby, or sports team? There is a sub for that. The user base here is just too small to facilitate that.

/r/buildapcsales is a great tool.

The fact is, most of their user base WANTS the censorship they provide.

I hate reddit but if there is information I want, and know I can find there, I'll visit.

[–] 7 pts

How do you know that most of the user base supports censorship when anyone who speaks up against it is banned and their comments deleted? I think there's a vocal something (minority, majority, unsure) that likes censorship as long as it's not happening to them. I think their posts that suck off the power tripping mods remain on the site.

It is like protesting/rioting without the approval of the rulers. If you protest you might end up in jail with property seized, that is quite a deterrent.

[–] 1 pt

Good point. We really have no way of knowing how many of us their are, other than just antidotal evidence from daily life. So many people don’t want to shake the boat and maybe just repeat the script that hate is bad. It takes a true enlightenment to see hate is just a defense against the statically true behavior for a bell curve of people. I think it is not easy to reach this enlightenment these days and many would choose to just outright look away versus rocking the boat. Sadly with free speech come things that rock the boat and scare away vast swathes of people.

I was going to say something similar. The number of "unofficial support" subs for weird things are numerous, it's one of the best places to get ideas and information on oddball single-board computers, and even mainstream things like Arduino.

I will admit, even those can be toxic. However, if you're looking for pure information that isn't mainstream news, you simply can't beat Reddit.

[–] 2 pts

Yep.

My friend has an arcade cabinet that he is in the process of converting to MAME. The person who was helping him apparently didn't know as much as he said, so I told him I'd help. I know for sure if I have questions about anything I'll be able to find the answers on Reddit faster than anywhere else.

[–] 1 pt

I deleted my account almost 10 years ago. I still check around 4 subs regularly. But like you said, its purely for information. I obviously don't post or contribute anything but I get good info. The Modest Mouse sub was awesome during their last tour. Every night I could find posts with Isaac hanging out with fans after each show. You can't find that anywhere else.

[–] 1 pt

I actually got about 100 bucks for my account back in 2016. For some reason people were paying for old accounts. I've since created a new account for lurking and sometimes I post if I have a question. It isn't like I want to be a part of that community or care about karma.

[–] 0 pt

Same here. I have a read-only account that never posts, it's just used to track all the tech and SBC subs I want to view.

[–] 0 pt

You just have to know where to look. Reddit is overrated.

Bro I rather use an old school forum. Redditors have only one way to display status, being a Google regurgitating robot. To reddit dwelling midwits, knowing stuff = status, you can tell they're midwits because they only accept Google approved sources and constantly use that as a form of argument.

Some of the shit they say is completely wrong and it gets upvoted. It's like getting financial advice on tik tok.

I rather deal with old school forums, less ego and people are more willing to help. God forbid the forum gets full of redditors, the quality drops like a neutron sledgehammer.

[–] 1 pt

My understanding is most don't want the censorship, but put up with it like you do because they use the small communities.

most of their user base WANTS the censorship they provide

I came here (to this thread, that is) with a similar thought. There is something alluring about being in an authoritarian system - whether it's online forums (fora?), law enforcement/government, what have you. The prospect of one day being able to call the shots and impose my will is hard to ignore.

Recently was reading an article about how we all craft our online experience to a large degree. We are the kings of our domain in that sense. We determine who we interact with, what information we want to get, etc.

You and I have chosen at least one place where we'll get a different stream of info, but even here we have the ability to block users, subs, etc. (This is by no means a complaint about those site features, merely an observation)

So all that to say, reddit users want to be dominated.

Good point about the hobbies too. I jumped into wet shaving back in the day, with a lot of help from their "community." Will never go back to "canned goo", cartridge razors, or reddit.

[–] 4 pts

Because like it or not, Reddit is a great source of information on anything that has not become politicized. It's mostly video game stuff, but the subs for hobbyists are really useful. But anything that touches politics is immediately nuked and/or censored until it satisfies the woke mob.

[–] 0 pt

OK. Info source. From cunts. Yep. Every redditor is a cunt.

Do I want to know how to be told how to cook by a cunt? No.

Do I care what a cunts opinion is of some new movie? No.

When I seek information I do so from decent people.

Since you clearly hang with cunts they will have rubbed off on you. I bet it wouldn't be hard to trigger you into exposing your inner cunt.

Have you actually checked out r/all/new? It's 90 percent porn, whores trying to pimp them selves out and fags trying to find a hook up. Reddit is a giant advertisement with a comment section.

[–] 0 pt

Do you remember when people started waking up to the native advertising theme? Personally I didn't notice it until Casper mattress.

[–] 2 pts

Its a low IQ dopamine mill. That's all.

[–] 2 pts

At this point I think most of reddit are bots or paid opposition.

[–] 2 pts

Depends on what you mean by "users".

Reddit is awash with an insane amount of bots and AI accounts all spouting crap random nonsense. the majority of the subreddits are all artificial & fake.

It is near impossible to have an intelligent debate on reddit without the comment section being swamped with bots all spouting incoherent nonsense.

A good example of this is r/unitedkingdom. Majority of the accounts and commentary are all from bots or people who dont even live there. Weird & sterile.

Also reddit uses bots to make the site appear like its being used heavily to attract ad revenue.

I see very little evidence that reddit actually has any real communities. All fake & sterile.

[–] 2 pts

Don't forget the bot trained people, who are afraid to think for themselves!

About a decade ago one of my hobby groups was sad about a product that was taken off the market. I did some reading and realized that the product was essentially oxyclean without detergent. When I suggested we try the appropriate alternatives the thread went off on me. Downvoted to oblivion

Posted my findings on another forum, they considered the idea, tried it and now considers the substitute standard practice.

Eventually this inability to think and experiment will cap the progress of hobby sub's and send experts to other places.

[–] 1 pt

The npc meme is real.

I can tell a redditor in the wild with ease. They all speak the same way. All think the same way. They all react the same way

[–] 2 pts

Reddit is a classic case of an inferior product winning because it got more popular because it was in the right place at the right time. Reddit became the defacto link aggregator after everyone abandoned Digg back in the day, people didn't go there because they thought it was great, they went there because Digg really fucked up. Reddit actually wasn't that bad before Digg exodus, and even at the start of that it wasn't too bad. The censorship eventually crept in from the far left subs and took over everything. I love you faggots but the way places like this are ran and the content ensures that if reddit were to fuck up as bad as Digg did and everyone left, normalfags wouldn't show up because the content would scare them.

[–] 0 pt

Fun fact. Real life is scaring normies.

If they are brave enough they start looking outside their bubble for the cause

[–] 2 pts

Hopefully they go to Score. A lot of the new accounts are toxic downvote fags.

[–] 1 pt

Ignoring the leftist NPCs and just focusing on the ones objecting to censorship, it's because freedom of speech is a risky position to stake a claim on (whereas whining on Reddit about censorship carries negligible risks).

On Poal they'll encounter unpopular ideas which they will have to assess and take a position on. E.g. discussions of the heritability of IQ are heavily censored on Reddit, but on Poal it's common knowledge that median IQ varies by demographic and this carries massive societal consequences.

On Poal, they'll discover that freedom of speech includes speech which they may disagree with and that you can't have freedom of speech any other way. That's a heck of a pill to swallow because it requires you to declare that anyone who wants to censor speech is unequivocally wrong. Which is going to force you to dropkick a host of friemds and family because they're reveling in falsehood.

They'll discover that supporting freedom of speech leads to social ostracism. E.g. their normie friends who'll autistically screech "You post on Poal with all those Nazis and ists and isms and reeeee". Even if they disagree with those viewpoints and simply value freedom of speech, they're going to lose NPC friends over it.

It's no small thing. It's akin to asking a normie to give up drinking and watching sportsball in favor of sobriety and discussing philosophy. It'd completely disrupt their NPC social circle and most people cant bear that
