It's a mix of technologies so when people say we've had it for ages already, they're probably referring to the type of 5G tech that is basically rebranded 4G. The signal type that some biologists are worried about is the high energy mmWave type, which only travels short distances but can also be focused into an intense beam and used to disperse rioters (see also: Havana Syndrome). Traditional phone signals are microwave rather than mmWave.
