Lonnie Johnson - Invented the Nerf Gun, and Super Soaker. His company is currently working on battery technology. When he was younger he was in the Air Force, and he worked for NASA. You can argue that toys aren't important but he certainly contributed to the economy, and created jobs.
George Washington Carver - He was an agricultural scientist, helped advance agricultural science, and productivity. Nothing exciting but he did make signifigant contributions to society.
Alexandre Dumas - Author of the Three Musketeers, a great writer, made lots of contributions in the area of writing. I know he isn't very dark but he is actually black. And you said they can't be in entertainment but books are educational. Writing a book is not like being an actor. It's very difficult to write a book.
Yup. That's all I got.
George Washington Carver's contributions really only benefited blacks. His primary contribution was educating black farmers how to farm and which crops they can best grow and rotate. As prior they were largely only successful with watermelon. He did research on uses for peanuts and whatnot.
I'm sure he did invent some things but iirc, they were largely variations of what already existed. I suppose you can argue he helped wide spread adoption of peanutbutter and bringing it to market.
