Putin saw the aggressive power grab from the US and moved in to defend former russian Territory, particularly Crimea as it was strategically important. He did everything completely legally according to the in, Crimeans voted to rejoin Russia and leave Ukraine, eastern Ukrainians also tried but poroshenko sent in tanks to oppress them.
