So during the cold war the name of the game was to get the nukes as close to their target as possible so you could reach that target quicker than they could reach yours.

You would want to hide its location (silo) because the most common target would be other nuclear launch sites and if you are close to them, they are equally close to you.

But there is no where more close than within the country itself. It would be absurd to think that governments at that time put no effort into concealment and camouflage.

So what do you think. Do you think there are Russian nukes in this country buried under ground, or nukes in Russia?

Most likely there's some nukes in the US that the military is unaware of.

Big country, lots of space, easy to hide at least 1 nuke. Remember, nukes can be made to fit inside a briefcase.

Well, a backpack. The idea of a briefcase is some Tom Clancy shit.

Same idea, much easier to conceal than an entire silo.

Probably. Are they in any state that they could be set off if found would be the better question. The most likely places would be Soviet/Russian embassies due to the privileges they are afforded. Not sure if consulates get the same protections.

As others point out, ICBMs have kind of made this specific device obsolete.

You're kind of wrong about the strategy of the cold war. That was only true until we developed ICBMs and SLBMs.

Now, as far as buried nukes are concerned, that's entirely feasible. There were plans made for chicken powered nuclear landmines (no joke), and Russia has shown off some backpack size nukes they've built.

If smugglers can get tons of drugs into the US then terrorists would certainly be able to get a nuke into the country.

I imagine an awful lot of effort goes into tracking the manufacture and transportation of nukes. Russia had some positioned in Cuba at one point, but they were made to move them away. The U.S. might have some level of control over nukes in Israel, but not officially.

I don't think there are full sized nukes hidden in or near America. There could be some sleeper cells with some dirty bombs or other such weapons though.

Buried nukes are hard to detect, but would have to be close to target and it's hard to get close to nuclear launch sites.

Nukes delivered by missile would need a silo or other launch facility which would be detected.

The trace radiation from any hidden nuke is surprisingly easy to detect. Even people that have had .

I don't think its very likely that there are any nukes in the US that are not US controlled, too hard to hide, there are so many radiation sensors all over the country, but what do I know I'm just a guy on the internet.

I guess I'm just hesitant to do a search for concealing a nuclear weapon.

Don't blame you, that could be disastrous for an individual, imagine what would happen if you actually found one.

Yet, discussing it openly on an internet forum is a-okay!
