I don't for slightly different reasons than most here probably... though I doubt my beliefs conflict with those.

If you go through news and articles leading up to the war the number they useds to describe how many were in danger was 6 million.

During the war Jewish extermination wasn't really a topic. It wasn't until after the war was won that it became a big propaganda issue for Russia to trumpet, they grabbed the 6 million number and ran with it because they had their own war crimes to distract from... likewise the US used the camps and killing to sell us getting into the war in the first place back home... remember that joining the war was not a popular decision because there really was no reason for it. Telling the people that weren't sure that our boys killed the people that were commiting genocide did a lot to change minds.

Growing up it was not popular belief that 6 million jews were killed. Even in school the number kept rising... 1.5m... 2... 3....4...maybe as many as 6m... then eventually the number was solidified as 6 million. It was changing right in front of me, despite that lack of any new forensic information, for no reason other than... the Jewish propaganda from before the war and the soviet propaganda after the war.

Boiled down... when you look at all of the propaganda from the soviets, not one thing wasn't massively exaggerated, if not completely fabricated... like Germans eating babies etc.

The chances that this is the one thing that they were just extremely factual about is less than 0.

remember that joining the war was not a popular decision

As I recall, it was very popular with the xtians...in fact I believe there was an ecumenical lobby for it.
