From what I had gathered, Lucifer was a fallen Angel and the name translates to 'Light bringer', FWIW. I always figured he became the devil afterwards. Had his own sweet crib called hell :) He was kinda pissed because God dropped his ass for criticizing. Understandable, to a certain degree.
How much of all this is lore and how much reality is anyone's guess.
