I'm currently having a heated discussion with some friends and a family member about where one of us who was born in 1983 - falls into Generation X or Millennials - I'm saying it's X because the boomers are from 1946-1964 (18 years) but according to "the internet" it says Gen X is from 65-80 (15 years).

I personally feel that a generation is 20 years - why should the boomer generation be worth 18 years while Gen X is only worth 15 years and Millennials are considered anywhere between 1980 to 2000 (20 years)?

So why are the amount of years fluctuating to fit people's little cliques and mindsets when it should be 20 years tops?

Does it really matter?

Some sociologists defined some arbitrary cut-off date to divide you from those around you, so they could get a research grant into studying the various strata and how they can efficiently put you into one category or another.

Stop arguing about unproductive things, like age demographics, and start having real conversations, like something about race demographics.

This is an artificially created division point. Of course you will see some generalizations that ring true. But, if you get toward the chronological edges of these categorizations things are not as simple. You can't tell me that a gen x person born in 1980 has less in common with someone that was born in 1985, than someone born in 1967.

Anybody that doesn't agree with a millennial is a "boomer".

Ask any millennial.

LMFAO! Ain't that a fact! Like a petulant child raging at daddy.

I believe most say Generation X is 1965 to 1980.

Generational gaps are not the same as what the media likes to say. They aren't perfect, and they do have overlap. This is the system I have devised that covers this. I am an expert.

Each 20 user generation is divided into:

3 year intro transition 7 year early generation 7 year late generation 3 year outtro transition

These can be disrupted pr altered on a large or small basis for different factors.

Rural communities will be a few years behind the curve, effectively placing them in a previous generational category.

Urban communities will be a few years ahead, defining the next generational category.

Older siblings and younger siblings may affect and alter instances of generational tendencies.

Major events or a lack there of may delay or expedite generational change over.

1963 is the beginning of "early gen x", "late gen x" is 1970 to 1976.The 6 year transitional period I refer to as "the last generation" is from 1977- to 1982. 1983 would be the first year of "early millenial".

You a millennial nigga.

What you're saying is interesting, especially about the intro and outtro transitions. I find that (generally) those born from 60 to 65 don't have many of the same characteristics as boomers or X. It's like they were kinda shuffled around and didn't belong. I also know a whole metric shit-ton from that age group that died of heroin overdoses and hep.

Things don't just happen overnight. The "sub gens" transitional areas naturally will have aspects of both generations.

You failed to provide a starting year for boomers and the silent generation.. You just started with '1963' and gave a bunch of stupid bullshit time frames to try to prove your point.

[–] 1 pt

Buddy do the math going back or forward. I have you THE SYSTEM RETARD. IF YOU CANT DO BASIC MATH THEN GO BACK TO SCHOOL.

[–] 0 pt

Going back WHERE EXACTLY - where's you're starting point for silent gen & boomers? You're the one not making any sense.

[–] 1 pt

I thought there was a Generation Y in there somewhere.

[–] 1 pt

Those were rebranded as Millennials.

[–] 1 pt

Not millennial. Gen Y.

[–] 0 pt

Ah, the middle child nobody cares about generation.

(Just kidding, they rebranded gen Y as millennials don't you remember? Because they were coming of age around the year 2000?)

[–] 0 pt

I refuse that moniker. Gen y should be from 1980-1999 Millennial should start at 2000 on But the internet is full of stupid people. These kids in thier 20s are labeling anyone they disagree with as a boomer. Its like no a boomer wouldn't be able to work a computer. Idiots.

The ) is mightier than the sword.

[–] 1 pt

This whole thing is retarded because they change it all the time. I recall millennial was anyone born POST MILLENIUM. After Gen X was Gen Y. But then gen Y became considered millenail and now they are considered boomers.

Born in '83, I remember being a Gen Xer per the media, my parents....that's what I was when I was a teen. It wasn't until a few years ago I read I might be a Millenial. I relate more to Gen X, and also don't really care. Just providing anecdotal evidence for you.

For you,it doesn't matter, millinis, genX,genY,none of you are worth a shit,y'all haven't done a fuckink thing to save, improve or even just help anyone or anything on the planet,y'all just complain, bitch, piss & moan about the 'Boomers'.Get the fuck out of you Boomer Mom's basement and do something.

[–] 0 pt

Ummmmm, haven't lived at home for 20 years. Own land and a house. Self-employed and provide jobs for others. Have a full-grown son who is also able to financially take care of himself on his own and doesn't need to live in my basement. No sure where you got that I moan about Boomers, it's been 4 days since I've been online for leisure, lol. I don't really have the time to whine and moan.

[–] 0 pt

Well,then I wasn't speaking directly to you then,was I.fuckin' smart ass.

[–] 1 pt

The whole labeled generation thing started with readers digest. Other publications later adopted the same kind of thing and over the years different publishers used different date ranges.

Depending on the source you choose, you ("one of us who was born in 1983") could be either.

If on the cusp, i think it depends on the culture you grew up in.
