You should look up info on the Fediverse. It's a bunch of completely independent servers. Some people run them on a paid VMs (Vultr, DigitalOcean, OVH ... AWS because they're retarded), some run them out of their homes. There are several different server softwares: Mastodon (which is written by some German cuck with a diaper porn fetish), Pleroma (their "code of conduct is the best ever), Misskey (made by some Japs), PeerTube (made for video) and others. Each "instance" can talk to each other using something called ActivityPub (it's like e-mail/SMTP, but for Facebook/Twitter type public posts). If you get banned on an instance, or the people you like get banned from your instance, you can just switch to another one. Someone who creates an account with the same name on multiple instances is said to have "alts".
