Russia of the Cold War was commie and picked the winners and losers as much as cronyism does here but it was worse in that it brought everyone down into the shit with it. That said I hate both and given a choice I would have neither cronyism or communism.
Were you alive during the Cold War? I can remember as early as 3rd grade teachers telling us all kinds of crazy shit, like Russians don't celebrate Christmas and if you have a Christmas tree in Russia they'll send you to Siberia. Basically Russians were a caricature of all that is evil in the world. There were many, many people who believed that Russian spies were lurking everywhere, maybe even under your bed. It was pretty crazy.
