They used to use the time to find a rich jet setting husband and leave the job after a couple of years. Now, they stay until they get old, fat and bitter. They used to fire them -- usually for being overweight (a weight limit was actually in the job description) or old, but courts/juries told them they couldn't, so now they just rot away in a jumpseat.
The airline industry had annualized tests that would weed out fatties and elderly. They would have to negotiate a minor obstacle course and climb through a small window.
climb through a small window
I am skeptical about this none of the windows on a commercial airliner are something you'd want to climb through and the emergency exits are larger than the aisles so they aren't an excluding factor.
Reading comprehension is a skill. I said nothing of an airline window. It was a small window at the training facility. I am aware of it because several older and heavier stewardesses complained in a lawsuit and the airlines had to alter their certifications. Think of it as a go/no go gauge. I tried to find a reference to the lawsuit but as with many things pre internet you have to rely on the old wrinkled Indian in the corner of the teepee passing on oral traditions.
Initial training used to be at MMAC. Dunk tank was also required.
You mean, demonstrate that they can handle their actual job of getting people out of burning airplane wreckage? It's deplorable to think that they should be able to do their job.
