They used to fire them -- usually for being overweight (a weight limit was actually in the job description) or old, but courts/juries told them they couldn't, so now they just rot away in a jumpseat.

I am skeptical about this none of the windows on a commercial airliner are something you'd want to climb through and the emergency exits are larger than the aisles so they aren't an excluding factor.
Reading comprehension is a skill. I said nothing of an airline window. It was a small window at the training facility. I am aware of it because several older and heavier stewardesses complained in a lawsuit and the airlines had to alter their certifications. Think of it as a go/no go gauge.
