Voat.co had a really good run and there were some outstanding discussions on there. That said, I do miss it a bit but not any more than any of the old websites which have entered the dustbin of history.
The level of discourse on poal is pathetic compared to what we had on old Voat. Average comment length here is one sentence. I'd be curious to compare figures.
And it's not like these single sentence comments are extremely insightful and witty. They're just bland affirmations towards the submission's title. This shit happened on voat.co of course, but people actually had DISCUSSIONS on Voat. Multiple paragraphs, which would then be addressed point-by-point by another user- and not the way users like AntiClutch do; They'd actually respond to what the person said!
That's what I miss about old Voat. I feel like I'm amongst a sea of tiny-brained, soft goofballs on Poal. I think and type really fast, so I end up reading an article/watching a video and writing a multi-paragraph comment with my take on the content; users seem to like most of my comments, but I wish I'd see more from other folks. The motto is "Say what you want!"... so fucking say something more than just "I agree with the OP, niggers/jews are bad."
