I have a small wood insert in an old stone fireplace. I typically brush it out once a year but I plan on using it quite a bit more frequently now that my kids are getting older. I'm burning bone-dry, standing dead western larch and Douglas-fir. How frequently do you guys brush?

I'm going on 12 years in my present house. I have no intention of ever cleaning the chimney. The previous house I lived in, the chimneys went uncleaned for about 30 years. Just for curiousity, I stuck a mirror in the bottom of the furnace chimney to take a look up it. The opening was about three inches wide. The rest was soot. I expect the chimney of the house I'm in now will look the same in 10 or 15 more years, but I'll probably be dead by then, so I don't give a fuck.

You would be surprised by how many people wait for the fire department to chain the burning creosote from their flu.

I had one once, cool to watch, terrifying to hear. Incinerated the flue cap. If you use dry wood and have a good flue temp you won’t get build up.
