My husband served in country but didn't shoot at people. He strapped pilots in their seats, and kept the nav and com systems working. So if he wants to wear a fucking Vietnam hat....he will. They sprayed agent orange on their heads right over the barracks. He has cancer, PTSD, hearing loss, and early dementia. If someone was "in country" they supported the guys in the sky and on the ground. He saw a lot of deaths and can't talk about it much. Can't tell you how many people he's met who claim to be snipers or whatever, then when he asks specific questions they come up dry.
