If you pushed paper and never saw any actual combat I don't think you should get the same level of respect as a guy standing up and shooting while being shot at.

I hung out with an old vet from Vietnam who was so fucking annoying turns out he was a pencil pusher he was on full disability getting 3k a year paying no property tax.. for 3 or 4 years of pencil pushing

Hot take: The current military system should only apply to the 2% or so actual combat personnel. For all the support jobs, the government should just hire civilians normally, same way they get postmen, police officers and DMV clerks. They shouldn't do boot camp, wear uniform, get equipment issued or be held to general PT standards by default, except where directly applicable to their job. They shouldn't get VA benefits or GI bill or generally count as veterans.
