Correct. Rap is the ultimate devolution of music (where will it go from there?). Jazz came, and swing (big band), then blues, then rock (which was basically sped up blues though it did get more complex), now rap. Edit, left out ragtime, which preceded jazz. Probably when music began to take on rhythm, a beat.
