Most people eat the Holliday Turkeys, but now with the federal decriminalization of eating horse meat, I was wondering if horse could become a holiday food.

I personally never ate horse nor do I know anyone that eats horse. I wonder who the horse eaters are and what it tastes like.

I think this will open the market for larger ovens; which is never a bad thing.

Horse is normal food for the Swiss.

It was one of those cultural oddities i noticed when i was there. Horse was on many menus.

Of course i tried it while i was there. It was very lean. It had an odd flavor. Not bad, just different. Kinda like the first time you ate elk or deer. It wasnt bad, but it tasted odd to you until you had it again.

I wouldn't eat horse as a matter of routine. I like horses and see them as noble creatures that aid man. Only a food source as a last resort. That being said. I like to try local foods when i travel. It was being served regularly, me not eating it wasnt going to change a horse getting butchered.

Supposedly the repeal was for older horses and injured horses, so it makes sense on the level. Otherwise they are throwing meat away. Taco bell uses horse meat, lol.

From my understanding. Horse has long been used in animal foods.

The major issue is when they banned horse slaughter, it financially incentivized people to abandon old horses, because they truly have no financial value. It costs money to feed a horse, and at a certain point they have no economic value. There was a problem with shitty farmers or decent farmers on hard times to simply abandon the animals or underfeed them.

We all know if you financially promote something, you WILL get more of it (eg. single moms, etc).

Allowing horse slaughter just makes sense, because even horses raised for other purposes will still need to eventually be slaughtered, so why make it unprofitable to the farmer or waste the meat? Even if it's just exclusively for dog food.

Horse is normal food for the Swiss.

For the French, too. It is definitely not a taste I enjoyed nor have had again.

We used to have a restaurant locally that served all sorts interesting food.

I miss that place. Covid killed it. It wasnt able to bring in the meat anymore. It depended on being able to fast ship everything it sourced from small butcheries.

Some of the menu highlights were Kangaroo, Black Bear, Brown bear, Reindeer, moose, elk, gator, rattlesnake. --- Lots of things i just cant get here easily. Granted I avoided the roo. I wasnt sure i wanted to eat that.

I love the kangaroo and gator. Don't like squid in its own ink.

There was a restaurant in Brooklyn Heights that served all sorts of game meats, as well as one in Staten Island. The latter closed years ago and I can't remember the name of former.

No,man. That is NOT right! I couldn't even fathom having a "Mr.Ed" burger.

I ate some horse in Belgium. They serve it at restaurants there. It was kind of funny to me because at the time there was a big story in England about how some ground beef was tested and it contained a small amount of horse and it caused major outrage, but then a couple hour train ride away you could order it off the menu.

Belgian horses are HUGE. Maybe that's why they have meat to spare for consumption.

I've heard it tastes good. However, they use horse antibodies in some medicines, like anti-venom for example. Would eating horse meat take away from the effectiveness of such meds? I don't know, so I'll stick with beef.

If cow meat is beef, and lamb meat is mutton, what is the term for horse meat?

Its refered to as chevaline.
