I wear tincloth (oilskin) pants for heavy rain gear. There is nothing superior. I've experimented with different waxes and treatments because the name-brand Filson wax is very expensive. But nothing I've tried even comes close to the quality of the Filson wax. Has anyone here come up with a homemade oilskin treatment that lasts?

It say on the website they use paraffin wax and a proprietary blend of softening oils. That probably means they use paraffin and linseed oil.

Melt a little paraffin and blend in a tiny amount of linseed, see if it reaches the desired consistency.

I've fiddled with that a bit but it took days for the linseed oil to set up.

A mix of UNBOILED linseed oil, beeswax and pine tar was an original mix if I remember right. Toilet bowl wax rings are good source for wax. Soaking a roll of cloth in it makes good patches for black powder rifles.

What ratio were you using? I'm thinking this should probably be just a dash of linseed to soften the paraffin, maybe les

I was probably heavy on the oil and I put it on pretty hot.
