Soon afterwards the reunited Germany brought into realization the war in Yugoslavia, the tighter control by a Germany-controlled European Union and the influx of "refugees" to fill in supposedly empty work positions. I don't know how much this benefited Germans themselves, but certainly didn't benefit the rest of Europe.
