A while back, Voat users provided a series of Windows install files and programs to remove all of the telemetry and related services from Windows 7. This suite was called Aegis.

Non-enterprise Windows 10 is blatant spyware. Has there been any attempt to create an Aegis for 10? Or is the software that deep in globohomo cuckery that there's no point to it?

When my Windows 7 machine inevitably dies, it would be nice to not have to learn Linux. But if there's no other choice, oh well, I'll man up.

Can I use it on a laptop that is several years old? Like an Intel quad core? i5

Linux is preferred on older machines as it runs better than Windows on them IMHO. Use Sparky if you want to mess with different desktop environments. The other distros people mention are great and will install easier than windows in almost all cases but I will generally go with plain jane Debian. I expect you will be pleasantly surprised at how damned good Linux is these days.
