A while back, Voat users provided a series of Windows install files and programs to remove all of the telemetry and related services from Windows 7. This suite was called Aegis.

Non-enterprise Windows 10 is blatant spyware. Has there been any attempt to create an Aegis for 10? Or is the software that deep in globohomo cuckery that there's no point to it?

When my Windows 7 machine inevitably dies, it would be nice to not have to learn Linux. But if there's no other choice, oh well, I'll man up.

Move to Linux btw. I recommend Manjaro.

Ubuntu or Linux MInt would probably be a better first distro. Manjaro is great, but requires a little more tinkering.

Start with mint and then move to something that does not use systemd.

SystemD complaints are a neckbeard cope. All the distros that use init are a PITA. It makes setting up services on Linux a lot easier.

That says unsupported version on recent windows 10. Have you tried it?

No, I haven't run Windows as my main for over 2 years. You can always try decrappifier on GitHub.

, it would be nice to not have to learn Linux.

It would be nice to, and once you've acquired enough knowledge and confidence, you'll never look back.

I have Win 7 and 10 running exclusively inside a VM (with all the spyware shit blocked at the network level).

I fooled around with it some back in college. Spent more time trying to find drivers than actually using it.

Linux has greatly matured since the past 2 decades.

You should give it a try again.

Ask for help in if you want to know what distribution fits your needs.

Can I use it on a laptop that is several years old? Like an Intel quad core? i5

It's still that way. At least for Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint. I tried all three on the last three machines I built and had constant issues with video and WiFi drivers that were locking me out of the internet or freezing the machine every ten minutes.

I used a different laptop and it made a world of difference. Some brands and models just have better support than others, and even in the last 10 years it's gotten much better.

I am by no means skilled with computers, but I moved to Linux Mint a few months ago. I'm still figuring out little things here and there but I'm very happy overall. Not that my opinion means much but I made the jump and I am happy I did.

I went through a lot of how-to's to braindead my Win10, but it all gets undone after updates apparently. I got fed up redoing stuff and finally decided that I have to beat it into submission to use it, it's not actually useful.

Fuck spending more time trying to braindead windows just to use it. Take the advice in this thread and try out Mint. It really is the best gateway for coming off of windows.
