Verizon informed me I need a new phone by January 1 that is 4G compatible. Will my phone truly not work after that? If I cave, what's the best bang-for-the-buck? Are there any snoop-proof phones (that don't cost over a thousand $$)?

Verizon and other carriers are shutting down the 3G cellular infrastructure which I assume your phone uses. This shutdown has been in the works for years and will affect many cellular devices besides phones. There were similar shutdowns with 2G, EDGE and analog cellular technologies over the years. At some point they will shutdown 4G as well. This will continue as technology evolves.

There is no snoop proof phone. Every kind of phone technology is compromised. The towers and lines themselves can be snooped on so the phone doesn't make much of a difference. This is how the world is now. It's bad but it is reality nonetheless.

I have no answers for you other than to say that yes 3G is being shutdown. You'll have to get a 4G phone and police yourself to stay relatively protected. Beyond that just know that anything you say can and will be used against you.
