Verizon informed me I need a new phone by January 1 that is 4G compatible. Will my phone truly not work after that? If I cave, what's the best bang-for-the-buck? Are there any snoop-proof phones (that don't cost over a thousand $$)?

I always buy Chinese phones. I know the government is spying ... but at least it isn't my government spying on me.

You can get an unlocked phone from Ali express or Amazon that will work on American carrier networks.

this is also what i have been thinking lately with that Huawei ban. I read that as they didnt let the NSA get a backdoor into the phone so the usa banned the whole company.

Huawei

The primary ban was of 5G infrastructure. But chipsets also matter. Infrastructure allows real time monitoring of all calls and data. Chipsets allow real time monitoring of the microphone, even outside a call.

Also worth pointing out, spying by one group does not exclude the other.
