Is it really such a surprise? These are unprecedented times in the history of humanity. The last several decades have done nothing but increase dependence upon the state, which loses a lot of people. A lot are lost to simple distraction, but this was always the case be it work or personal pursuits. Centralized control of media and information loses a lot of people. Control and censorship of the methods of communication loses still more. When the handful of people who evade this filter try to organize they are quickly ferreted out, often before they can achieve anything, by an impressively vigilant state. Discreetly if they are too sympathetic, as a public example of terrorism if they are not. Meanwhile you have people cognizant of the issues that are too conditioned to 'optics' to ever name them and a military that has been systematically purging anyone who would not follow an unconstitutional order for several years now. A revolution or even a constitutional convention would at this point take total economic collapse and we'd merely be fighting over the ashes.
