I know it became Jew infiltrated by the end, when expelled jews from Spain, etc set up shop there as the new financial center of the world, before moving onto England. My guess is basically that, but anyone have any good sources on how that power evolved into current times?

Nobody has enough cash (or gold) to buy it. As far as I know.
