Been thinking about getting a Mantis X3 to train at home and save a few bucks on ammo, but not knowing anyone who has used one, am curious about how much it would help or if it's even worth getting.

Same here. Looks like a cool device. I was also looking at airsoft. If nothing else getting into airsoft might get me off my ass more often.

Is airsoft actually good for practicing firearms training like at home for example? I've never fired one.

I have a green gas pistol (M9) and the slide has a recoiling action when you shoot it. It fits in most holsters made for the real thing and nicer ones than mine have 1 for 1 working controls. Accuracy is so so but again mine is a cheaper one. I think they are great for practicing things like drawing from a holster, trigger discipline, sight alignment, reloading if you have multiple mags. It sure doesn't replace the real thing but if you're like me and just don't get to the range very often having the ability to go to your garage and "shoot" for a few minutes every day is better than nothing.

Yes. My kids have glock style airsoft. The safety, sights, and weight are similar enough to real firearms, for training purposes. Obviously the range & recoil is not the same with ammo vs airsoft... But recoil is a non-issue for sight-training purposes, since training yourself not to anticipate the recoil is key to a straight shot. The recoil from airsoft is still there, but not as intense... so new learners will experience that recoil on a lesser scale and comprehend the physical affects of firing. My kids haven't fired live ammo yet, but when they do, they won't be surprised by the mechanisms of firing live ammo. Just like driving a car, you learn to view your equipment as an extension of your self, and so you develop a subconscious memory for appropriate maneuvers specific to your equipment. After establishing a second nature for your equipment like a car, you could theoretically apply those same learned maneuvers in a similar type car with success- same goes for firearms.

There is 3 tiers to the device, from what I can tell. The cheap one is dry fire only, the expensive one does archery and shotguns also, the middle one I was looking at is for handguns and rifles, both live and dry fire. It specifically says that one works with airsoft. Plus with airsoft, you don't have to keep racking the slide apparently.

I remember seeing versions for the AR & Glock that would do trigger resets so you weren't constantly racking the slide/charging handle.

Get an airsoft (a good one). When gassed it goes fUllY sEmiAuto and you can fire it in your backyard. Without gas you can still do 1r1/draw/dryfire

Depending how hard you want to larp, you can take it and do force on force training instead of shooting paper all day like a boomer

I have the Mantis x10 and Dryfire mag. Used it a bunch of times for dryfire and then it went in the closet.

I'd say if your not going to be shooting much due to ammo prices or whatever it can help keep you sharp for free. I should break it out again really.

I have the SureStrike bullet. Works great if you have a DAO (double action only) pistol. That way you aren’t racking the slide every time. 1911s work great as well.

They also had/have a trigger for glocks that would reset, if you will, with out racking it.

I've heard good things about it but not sure how much of that came from people who have used it vs saw it and liked the idea

Not familiar with the Mantis X3 but it looks interesting. I think one of these with a CoolFire Trainer barrel might be they way to go

I like the idea of those but a rail mounted system doesn't seem like the best way to train. I have a friend who uses the G Sight Elms system and he loves it. It significantly increased his time to target. He just sets it up around his office and that's how he takes breaks. Since that's an inside the barrel laser, it feels more realistic to where you are pointing. That kit is something I'm considering as well. Nice way to save money on ammo and still train whenever you feel like it.

Ah yes the Mantis x3 - highly recommended by John Correia of ASP (Active Self Protection) to give you an edge when facing bad hombres with bad intentions. Give them the room temperature challenge - and get yourself the Mantis x3.
