Why would you hunt squirrels for meat, it is a waste of the resources of a bullet for the tiny bit of meat you get...
I might have skill with a BB/Pellet gun that could be helpful here and eliminate the need for black powder.
Air cartridge, those are also a resource in a survival situation extra bulk and weight... My suggestion get yourself a sling bow and a few arrows better yet get two... get a small book on fletching, and carry the supplies {glue,tools}... bring a small arrowhead mold and crucible to melt down tin or iron... With those you can take down bigger game and not waste any resources... For example running out of good arrows, hunt a bird or two find some sticks, you should always have extra arrowheads that you can manufacture in the field...
Real BB/Pellet gun owners use a pump gun, no need for cartridges, that crap is too expensive and the pressure is inconsistent over the life of the cartridge. Source: Real BB/pellet gun owner with pump action.
