Yahweh has evolved over the millennia. He started out as a local mountain god who was always jealous about something or other, and he ended up as the one only creator God of the universe in three persons.
In my opinion, and the opinion of the Gnostics, the early Yahweh was evil. But the later understanding of this deity was of a God not evil. The present God of the Christians is nothing like the angry, jealous mountain-god of Moses. They share the same name, but they are completely different deities. It's like Adolf Hitler and the Adolf Meat Tenderizer guy -- same name, two completely different persons.
Wouldn't it make more sense that those who actually lived with God on a daily basis understood God's love for them much better than those who only had brief encounters with him?

Moses didn't follow the Christian God.
