Canadians copy every holiday the US has. They celebrate Thanksgiving earlier in October. Boxing day is a British holiday.

We kind of had to celebrate it earlier, otherwise we'd all be sharing snow and ice for dinner.

And forget the Canada vs US nonsense. We were settled by the same people, we just never won our freedom from the Crown. Both Canada and the US were at their best when we recognized we were brothers. In all fairness, we're both being erased so quickly, it's not surprising no one remembers.

Correct, Americans and Canadians were British originally, so no more brother wars please.

Boxing day is when you take all the crap from Christmas that doesn't fit, or you just don't like, and you put it back into the boxes to return it to the store.

Just for reference, originally it meant the day the well-to-do wrapped up the leavings of their big Christmas dinner and handed it out to beggers.

In Canada, we give each other Everlast gloves for Christmas. The day after Christmas, is the settling of grievances or Boxing day.

Boxing day is the day after Christmas when stores offload their crap at a discount.

I saw somewhere that the US once had the same Thanksgiving Day as Canada, but the (((merchants))) wanted it moved to late November to help extend the year end holiday shopping season to increase their profits.

"The Oxford English Dictionary gives the earliest attestations from Britain in the 1830s, defining it as "the first weekday after Christmas day, observed as a holiday on which postmen, errand boys, and servants of various kinds expect to receive a Christmas box"

I remember giving the bin men what was known as a Christmas box, and it probably dated back to include other service trades

Boxing day is based on a Solstice holiday tradition that goes back to the Romans. On that day the servants and masters would switch place for the day, with the master doing the servants work while the servants would take over any of the master's responsibilities (often just relaxing). It was a kind of a 'servants appreciation day' if you will.

Later the English, adopting the practice from the Romans, brought it on as one of the 12days of Christmas. Money and donations would be placed in a box and would be distributed from to the poor and less fortunate on Boxing Day. They would also often copy the Roman tradition of masters and servants switching places for the day in good fun. Servant jobs for the household would also get money or a bonus, often referred to as a Christmas box for the year of service. This is still often done by people at Christmas when you give a bonus tip to your Postman, Gardener/Lawn guy, paper boy, etc.

There's and old episode of MASH that addresses the day https://youtu.be/3E17xEsi48g
