Morning.

Just a Turkeyday Ethics discussion.

If there is one, what is the Virtue from which all other virtues stem?

I often think that it’s humility. Whenever I’m fucking up, if I try and recenter my decisions around humility, it usually works itself out. This could be my shitty personality in particular or it could be fundamental. I dunno. I can only live inside this skull at the moment.

Curious to hear from you.

I wish you a pleasant and peaceful day, wherever you are, and if you’re alone, please know that you’re being prayed for.

I don't have a good long explanation for why, but I probably vote for honesty as I regard truth as the highest value.

I am interested in humility though, since I grow up in an atheistic environment and to be honest we atheists are usually not particularly humble or seem to value it highly.

How do you learn to be humble?

[–] 2 pts

involves submitting onesself to God and to properly understand one's place. This does not mean perpetual depression about one's lack of worth, but to know our limitations and our strengths.

This. Without self honesty all other virtues become a matter of luck.

I think one can be honestly evil. Especially with regard to scientific achievement. Science is based on honesty, which actually makes it incredibly effective and dangerous. Imagine if science were based on humility!

I imagine that if humility was required by scientists we would still have science today.

You and I both know that science has been corrupted and subverted by greed pride and many other sins.

Science as we knew it is dead and gone

I think pure science is humble.

Science doesn't say it knows everything, pure science is very clear about what it does not know.

I mean yea, science could theoretically lead to nuclear war that wipes us all out which would not be good. I am not sure about how more humilty would solve that though.

From to a biblical perspective, if the foundational sin is pride, which I would say aligns with both original sin - seeking a means of becoming equal with God through the Edenic fruit - as well as the final sin, transhumanism - an attempt reject reality as a means of achieving immortality via materialism, then the inversion of pride is humility, to be sure.

Humility is also at the root of acknowledging God’s role as both creator and sustainer, as well as the need for God as incarnate savior in light of our fallen state. Moreover, it takes humility to surrender not only at that initial point of salvation, asserting the need for saving grace at the Cross, but also in an ongoing process of growth and maturity after that point as we submit to His authority over our lives, moment by moment.

So, yes, absolute pride is the original sin, therefore absolute humility is the foundational virtue. However, this only insofar as your willingness to take zero credit for any good within you, attributing all to God through the saving power of His Son, Jesus Christ, the God who became man, lived a perfect life, died on the cross, rose again, and now sits at the right hand of the Father.

The answer to OP's question is directly answered multiple times in proverbs:

The beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord.

Love is what separates you from those who rule over us.

They don't have what God gave us.

Love is the answer.

Loving evil is the worship of satan

We are in the forth turning, the apocalapse because of Satan worship.

[–] 1 pt

Ya it’s really in your face now. Satan seems to control most of it.

The kids just need a little dad time to straighten them up.

If they knew that what awaits them is death by becoming a food source for another species, would they change their ways or be eaten?

Prudence, , followed by the remaining of justice, fortitude, and temperance.

We need to try to restore the classical definitions though, since they have been corrupted in recent years. No, "justice" has nothing to do with the SJW movement.

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.

Virtue is cultivated by an intense passionate desire for apathy.

“Passionate desire for apathy” is the song of the age.

virtues root

Its probably different for everyone.

For me I think it is realizing all the knowledge I had at 11 years old and holding on to that throughout life.

Not letting, social norms, religion, mans twisted law, peer pressure... shake those original pure inclinations go, but rather hold them dear and cultivate them.

If you can do that, then hold your head high and know you are a good man. Virtue is holding on to you and what you are.

We all have god in us letting us know what is right n wrong. The cosmic emotions... Someone in the thread mentioned humility, that certainly plays a role.

Good tidings

giving of one's self. Selflessness.

Maybe the root of that is love.

Love

Not sure if this applies , but yesterday I was thinking if I was to do my life over I would be harder on myself , and more charitable to others. Understand that people are imperfect beings and not take things personally when they act foolishly , or just act like a fucking dick

[–] 1 pt

more charitable to others

Yep, I'd be nicer to men, I realised when I got old that literally everyone shits on their fellow man, and I dislike my part in that.

Everyone's nice to women, they have zero problems in life

[–] 0 pt

Idk , some folks aren't very nice to women

[–] 1 pt

sure, some, but everyone is shitty towards men

[–] 0 pt

not a virtue, but everything derives from philosophy

[–] 0 pt

The root virtue is truthfulness. From it all other virtues spring.
