You could argue that because he was chased down while trying to escape, prevented from escaping, and then had his life threatened, that he felt he feared for his life and had no choice but to act in his own self-defense (charging and grabbing the gun to end the threat to his life).
As aaronc stated, this situation does not meet the legal requirements for self defense.
How was he prevented from escaping? He could have kept jogging or stopped and acted like a normal human and waited for the cops this was 100% self defense
