We have both. Small house dog and large outside livestock guardian dogs, who would rather die than go the house. All depends on why you have the dog.

Sepherd hunting/guide dog. Mine for example hates being in the house for most of the day, but does like a comfy mattress from time to time

In the country my pack of five stayed outside most of the time. No one got near the place without my dogs alerting. On cold winter nights they got to come inside and sleep near the propane heat stove and sometimes one would earn the favor of the head dog (me) and get to lay on the couch while I read. Now more city and the pups stay inside most of the time. Life without dogs is not complete.

Inside. I'm not a fucking savage. Lived across from a moslem family. They had a German shepherd. Kept it chained up in the garage or to a tree 24/7 all year long. Dog disappeared one summer. No idea if it died or got taken away.
