I just bought a house and there is a 3 gallon container of the stuff in the storage shed . The previous owner was an electrician and God fearing man so I don't think he was drinking it . Anyone know its' purpose / use ?

Punctilious just means that its stated purity is highly accurate. That said, however, most industrial alcohols are denatured, meaning that they have added methanol, or other toxic shit to prevent people from drinking it. During prohibition, the government required denaturants, even if it wasn't labeled as such. So basically thousands of people died because governments government.

You could burn it in your car. If you have a supply of non-ethanol gasoline nearby you can add 1 too 1.5 gallons of it for every 10 of gas.

Edit: one last thought. The old moonshiner way of testing for methanol contamination (methanol contamination is what could cause people to lose their sight from bad batches) is to light a spoonful on fire. If the flame is invisible or blue, you have pure ethanol. If it burns with a yellow or orange tip, it's contaminated. In not sure if bet my life on that test though. Acetone and other solvents can also be used to denature.

Alcohol for cleaning is still denatured as far as I know. Basically all of the alcohol that can't be drunk for tax purposes. If it's not denatured, you have to pay a sin tax. So, yeah, governments are still governmenting.

It is almost pure alcohol, so you can clean things with it (like electronics) and then it will quickly evaporate leaving no liquid behind.

I used to use the stuff. It's fantastic for cleaning off thermal paste.

I'm pretty sure that's just everclear. You can drink it, but definitely don't just listen to some idiot like me on the internet, and if you do drink it you will want to mix it with something. That's 95 proof, and straight, it can be pretty rough on your esophagus and stomach. Also, it averages out to a potency of about 2:1 compared to an average hard liquor, something else to keep in mind so you don't poison yourself. Methyl alcohol is the stuff you really don't want to drink.

If it's from the last 2 years it was most likely being used as a disinfectant. Could also use it as fuel or a solvent.

Alcohol that high proof is used to clean electronic parts & components;due to the obvious reasons you can't use water.

Nice! I think there was a post not too long ago about using alcohol to disinfect. If i was you, id make sure that container is air-fucking-tight, and keep it stored away, just in case.

When in doubt don't drink that kool aid. You are better off assuming it is not safe and treat it like gas.

ethyl alcohol owner was an electrician

he was probably using it to clean switch contacts on contactor switches

I use isopropyl alcohol for much the same thing

That also explains the 30 bottles of rubbing alcohol .

My dad used to get denatured alcohol from his work to put in his gas tank as a cleaner. I wonder if this can be use for the same.

Its basically ethyl alcohol but made carefully "with attention to detail". Its possible it was used to remove water from electric components?

Makes sense , previous owner lived here for 55 years and was an electrician . He left all kinds of neatly organized stuff behind .
