It wasn't dinosaurs. It was vegetation. Trees and plants were on earth for hundreds of millions of years before bacteria learned how to break down cellulose.
That was a lot of material deposited before it was converted to hydrocarbons.
However, I don't believe that it is the primary source either. One of the Jupiter moons apparently has large amounts of hydrocarbons ... so who knows.
