I think this shows us the intent. It was probably less about ruining the word gay and more about taking baby steps to make faggotry sound more positive. In other words changing the implication from "these people are strange" to "doing this makes these people really happy"

I have said this for a while. I also wonder how they stole the word gay. I personally refuse to let them steal words. I still use the term gay and queer as it was originated. Ignorant people are often confused.

It's a tragedy to see it degraded by some artificial connection with homosexuality. I could say the same about "faggot" but that's not a word that had great currency in English, so not such a big loss. "Queer" once meant odd or strange. We haven't quite lost that one -- you can still use the word "queer" in this context and be understood by readers.
