Tetanus can live on any surface that's not been exposed to direct sunlight. That's why it is found on nails (often embedded in wood) or chunks of metal that have been half buried for example. If you live in a city then you won't often encounter it, but people who living the country have a genuine chance to be infected.

Actually the polio vaccine only treated one source of paralysis and came too late to be of much use as the root cause had already been addressed.
