Another thought I've had is that someone will at least attempt to kill Kyle once he is found not guilty.

Keep in mind that the prosecutor in court may or may not agree with the decision to prosecute. He doesn't get to make that choice. That choice is made by the DA. This guy gets assigned to the case and has to prosecute it whether he agrees with it or not. Like every job in the world, if your boss pisses you off there are ways to sabotage your boss in a way that is difficult or impossible to prove so you can't get in trouble for it.
