I know the taste you are referring to - Lavagulin is a good example. Some people like it but to me it tastes like the smell of a freshly laid asphalt road.
Try something that was aged in a sherry barrel (may be referred to as olorosso) like Auchentoshan 12 year. Then you don't get that peety taste. It's just smooth sadness.
As for the worst whisky I ever tried... "Wild Fields Single Grain". Polish whisky. So, so horrible. The taste and smell are offensive. It was undrinkable even mixed with coke. Tastes like it was aged in a barrel previous used to house old brake fluid.
