Took me three tries to read the entire book, its a bit dry and takes about 100 pages before the story takes off, once I made it there, I loved it! Gobbled up the sequels until book 4, realized the writing style and story line had changed significantly, obviously different authors. Put the series down after that.

I’ve never read the book but isn’t the setting a big desert planet?
I see what I did there, lol! Good point.

That would be Herbert's son, Brian. Officially Brian wrote books 7, 8. But ... yeah, odds are he was heavily involved as a ghost writer earlier as Frank was near death.
Yup - Frank Herbert died before the later books were finished.
Later on, a series of new books, both before and after on the timeline, were produced with ghost writer assistance, in cooperation with the family, culled together from Herbert's archive of unpublished Dune materials, and ghost writers filling in the gaps, tying the stories together. Some are better than others, but the main big picture themes are well preserved, in my opinion.
To date, still the best science fiction ever written.
They didn't switch authors at book 4. Frank Herbert got old and like many didn't feel the need for an editor. The best thing that happened to the first one was it was serialized in Sci Fi magazines, forcing it to be edited for length and to adopt some episodic pacing. By book 8, this guy is a Sci Fi God and no one can tell him his writing sucks.
It picks back up again:)
