Yeah the first book was like a revelation -- I don't know what it would be like to read for the first time today, but back then it was really something -- but I finished the 2nd book as a courtesy. My buddy read the series all the way to the end, but even he said it was a labor of love.
Other than an abundance of niggers and making the Ecologist a female nigger the movie is not woke at all. In fact if anything DV tones down the Benne Geserat (however it's spelled) which is afterall a female only discipline and very influential in that universe. As well Jessica comes across as not as strong as she is in the book, thought that might have been the result of the casting choice. I didn't care much for Oscar Issacs in his role either; he doesn't have the physical presence that I feel the role needed. Not terrible, but could have been better.
But it's a really good film. It certainly doesn't move along briskly but at the same time I was never bored and when it ended I was actually surprised that 2 plus hours had passed
