I'm considering buying a new pickup. There's one localish, standard trans with 150k miles and asking $3.5k.

The truck would mainly be used as a work truck hauling a 5x8 utility trailer with about ~ 750lbs.

Not looking for brand fanboyism, just people with real life experience driving/working on these trucks and whether it's a good buy or not. It's a bit of a drive (3 hrs) so not something I'm willing to just go casually look at in person, I only want to drive out there if I know I'm buying it.

That’s a really good deal for any truck right now.

I had one of that era, though mine was a 4.6 V8. Used for towing regularly. It ran great for some 10 years until i sold it. I knew the guy and last I heard it failed inspection for too much rust.

Actually mine was a gen before, 2002.

Not bad miles for the age fords get shit for transmissions but I’ve owned plenty with high miles without issues Rust is the biggest problem look it over well Expect to be doing ball joints and tie rods I’ve had issues with the 4x4 system semi engaging with a slight vacuum leek at the actuator

The 4.2 is a decent engine. Its fairly reliable and easy to maintain. Just make sure to do the services as listed and they can go to 250-300k

Good side if the engine fails, they are readily available in yards for not too much.

all trucks are 2x the price right now. hold off buying if you can. Also never buy a 2020-2021 vehicle of any kind. all will be lemons

I own an auto repair shop and drive a 99 Dodge 1/2 ton as my daily driver I would not own a Ford if you paid me. They pay my bills though. A better deal for a cheap work truck is a Chevy or GMC they are easy to find from large fleets.

If its a good deal, why hasn't someone 10 minutes away jumped on it.... bring a mechanic minded friend with to inspect

Seems like a good deal. I have the same bodystyle with 5.4. Everything has lasted well into 200k and I would guess less issues with the v6

Got a 2004 5.4L Lariat and it's been great. Only 120k miles on it and it gets the job done.
